Gas usage excessive

Hi I switched to SSE in Dec 2017 when we bought the house. 2 people living in a 2 bed house older property. We have a smart meter from EON who the supply was previously with. The readings on the meter have shot up since then from 8915.629m3 to 15796.179m3 in one year, they say we have used about 74,000KWH. this seems a massive jump in usage the previous owners who were with EON used13,000KWH last year. they were a retired couple who were home more than we are. during winter it comes on for an hour then in the evening about 3-4 but on a thermostat set at about 18 so its not on all the time. we have a Boshe combi boiler for heating and hot water and a gas hob. I switched the boiler off last night for 2 hours and it did not register any use on the meter. its a digital meter do these go wrong when switching suppliers? SSE are trying to push me into a meter test and saying if the meter is working you will be charged for the test and it will be added to the bill and you will have to pay the whole gas bill.

Is this consumption based on ACTUAL or ESTIMATED readings ?

You can ignore the 3 figures after the decimal point.

Although it was a Smart meter with Eon since your switch to SSE it has been working in dumb mode and the reading of the meter depends on you every month.

Unlike an old analogue meter where the readings were powered by the gas passing through it, Smart meter displays are powered by a battery and the electronics can go rogue.


You have tested the meter's reading with all Gas off - now test it by burning only one hob gas ring and record just how fast the meter number is rising over half an hour.
