Child Benifit opt out didn't happen!

Just discovered that we have been receiving Child Benefit despite opting out back in 2013! Any idea what we will be liable for and how to stop the benefit and payback over payment as painlessly as possible!

  • Its been going into your bank account every month for 5 years and you have ONLY JUST noticed???

You need to contact them and tell them, and hope they will allow you to repay on a reasonable basis and not demand it all back in one go. How much you are liable for depends on how much you have been getting x 60+ months.

When you say you opted out - was this to do with the tax charge?

If so, the child benefit will not be overpaid, it will be the tax charge that you owe with potential penalties etc...
