i am on a Virgin Media package which includes the TV. Some time ago with a new V6 box they sent me two Netgear Powerline extender, which work fine. However the Wifi is very weak in the upstairs of our house so i purchased on e Bay (at a good price) two Netgear AV 500 Powerline extenders, which I was hoping would resolve the issue. When I plugged them in to the mains the WiFi light does not come on which indicates they are not working properly. Am i mistaken in thinking that the two additional Powerline extenders should work. Am I doing something incorrectly or am I barking up the wrong tree and need something else. any guidance to point me in the right direction will be greatly appreciated. i realise now i should have done more research before buying the two additional powerline extenders. Thank you

Have you 'paired' the adapters which tells them that they are all linked together? I normally plug them all into a 4 gang extension so they are all next to each other.
Normally 1 led = power on
    2 LEDs = adapters paired
    3 LEDs = ethernet connected
    4 LEDs = Wifi working
You will have to read the instructions to pair them. Normally you press a button on one and then on the other within a few seconds.

Once you've got it all working on ethernet, the wifi sometimes needs setting up because the password on your device must match the password on the adapter. Different manufacturers have different ways of doing this. You need to check instructions. Some you press WPS on router and a button on the adapter.
  • It may not be relevant but I purchased on E Bay a Netgear Wi Fi Range Extender WN2000 RPT, which does not connect to my WI FI despite numerous efforts. I am still left with the problem of trying to improve my WIFI reception in the upper floor of my house. From what has been said the Netgear Powerline may not be a good option, so I need to investigate further as to what the best option may be!!
  • I have experieced exactly the same issue. I purchased additional Netgear Powerlines to use upstairs in my house to improve the WiFi connection and that on my Amazon Fire Stick, but it was entirely unsuccesful, as the addituional Powerlines had no effect. The reception upstairs is still poor. Like the previous OP I am disappointed or have misunderstood what that piece of equpiment shoud achieve

I have three Talktalk power adaptors ( do not know who manafacture them, will not be Talktalk ) but they all pair up so have great wifi upstair to my dektop.
  • Are Netgear Powerlines the same as an adapter mentioned above
  • Just picked up this old post. i have two Netgear Powerline extenders with my Virgin Media broadband and they worked perfectly. However I was still experiencing problems received WiFi in certain rooms upstairs in our house. So I purchased two additional Netgear Powerline extenders, but to my horror I have been unable to get them to work properly upstairs. I get the power but the middle WiFi green light does light up which results in no WiFi. The top and bottom light show green. I have been unable to rectify the problem. Maybe I do not need to use two additional Powerline adapters only one. If two were should they be plugged in. Is my set procedure incorrect. Any advise as to how to solve this issue will be wonderful as I am stuck.

The powerline extenders need pairing. So if you have two working and want to add another, you need to press the pairing button (encryption button?) on one of the existing plugs and then press buttons on the new one. The instructions explain the sequence needed. I suggest doing this in the same room so you can see what is going on, once you've added the new socket to the network take it upstairs and see how it goes.

Adding more sockets doesn't increase the speed available, so it gets shared out (unlike adding network cables, where they each get their own 100M/1000M), if your mains gives about 100M, then that 100M will get shared between all the different routes.

The problem that these devices have is that they are very dependent on the cabling in the house, from one socket to another may be great, and then another socket can be dreadful. I couldn't get mine to reliably connect the length of one room, yet it had previously been happy across a more complicated link of wiring.

Rather than adding 2 Netgear Powerline extenders to improve the WiFi reception upstairs would it be better to purchase one Netgear adaptor. Does an adaptor and extender do the same thing or Is one more efficient than the other.
