I was in an accident and it wasn't my fault

I've just had a couple of peculiar phone calls, and I'm not sure if they're legit.

Last week, there was a nasty little crash between two cars, and unfortunately my parked and unattended car got caught in the crossfire. Police fire and ambulance were all in attendance, all cars were insured, and obviously regardless of which of the two cars was at fault, there is no blame attached to me at all.

My insurers have been informed, my car has been recovered, and a hire car has been sorted.

Just had a phone call today from someone from 'Accident Services'. Never heard of them. He said he was ringing to check that 'everything was OK' (his words). As we get plenty of phishing calls even when we haven't had an accident, I was expecting the number of dodgy phone calls to increase. But I can't decide if this was legit or not. I asked for his full name, which he gave me, and his phone number came up on my phone. I asked him for proof that he wasn't phishing, which he didn't seem able to give me to begin with. I could hear laughter in the background, and a comment that seemed to relate to something I'd just said, which was at the very least, unprofessional. But it turned out that he had lots of details (date of accident, reg no of my vehicle, name of policyholder, our home address), and I made sure not to tell him anything that he didn't already know.

Two minutes later, I got another phone call from the same company (but different caller) - altogether more professional sounding. But he still couldn't explain to me in words that I could understand (and I ain't stoopid...) just who they were and what they wanted. He started talking to me about 'outstanding premiums' (we pay in full at the start of the year...), and payments that I might be entitled to due to the injuries I sustained. As soon as he realised that there were no injuries, he said he was closing his file and hung up on me.

All very odd. And maybe just people doing their job. But it smelt like phishing to me. I googled the company and this came up

Is there anything I should be worried about?

They're just looking to refer you for personal injury claims and receive a nice juicy commission in the process. They pretend to be from, or associated with your insurer in order to sound legitimate. One of the parties involved in the claim will have sold your details on to them. Just hang up and ignore them.

ETA: I got hounded relentlessly by one after someone went into the back of me. They didn't seem to understand "I'm not injured, do not call again"

I still get calls about the 'bad accident' I was involved in around 2012, and my outstanding 'injury compensation'. The details they hold about me are correct, other than there were no injuries at all.

I find threatening them with the police makes them stop for a bit, but then they sell the details to the next ambulance chasers and it starts again. It's tedious.
  • I'm quite used to getting them when I haven't been in an accident - and I'm quite happy to hang up on them. But this time, they rattled off the name of the organisation so quickly (and I have been in an accident, and I've been on the phone for what feels like days trying to sort things out) that at first I assumed that it was a genuine call related to the claim. I guess I let my guard down a bit.

My only uninsured loss so far has been £20 for a taxi to go and get a few things that we needed out of the car, now that it's been brought up to the repairers - and I'm perfectly capable of sending a receipt to the third party to get my money back on that!!
