Car Insurance - Who Pays For Courtesy Car

Quick question:
I was involved in a car accident (that I think was/is likely to be ruled my fault), I was given a courtesy car whilst the insurance-appointed engineers were in the process of writing the car off (which as of Monday was confirmed to me). I have had the courtesy car for 21 days, will the insurance cover this cost, or if the accident was my fault - they can refuse? If so will I be stuck with 3 weeks worth of car hire charges? I just assumed that insurance covers this, but stumbled on an article that suggest it may not be the case.

It depends on your policy. If it was your fault, then generally you would be responsible for your own costs as regards hiring a car (or choosing to go by bus, or whatever), but some insurers do cover the cost of hiring a car even if the accident was your fault.
You need to check your policy documents - or just ring them and ask.No longer a spouse, or trailing, but MSE won't allow me to change my username...0 -
The question is....
Is it a 'courtesy car' which is normally provided by the bodyshop
who are carrying out the repairs OR is it a hire car.
These are two totally different things.
A hire car would normally be paid for by the others party's insurance if they are at fault.
However some insurances I have seen provide a hire car for a fixed period of time ( e.g. 14 days ) if you pay for this cover when buying the insurance.
From your post it would appear that this was probably a hire car but we don't know what extra cover you bought so can't really fully answer your question.0 -
It would appear from a quick scan of things, that insurance provides hire car as standard and will be covered by my policy, even if I was at fault (as I can't see it stated anywhere that's not the case).0
