Microsoft Office

Sorry I'm a not very good with IT. I have a new laptop and want to use word, excel and microsoft mail. I won't be a heavy user just the odd spreadsheet and letter typed. What options do I have to purchase or download copies, do you advise biting the bullet and paying for the original package from microsoft? Thanks in advance for any help.

I bought an Office key from Amazon a few months back for less than a tenner. They give a link from MS to download the install package. Works fine, even had to call MS support about something, no problems.

You could buy MS Office. It is usually cheaper from Amazon the Microsoft directly.

You could use the free Libre Office suite. There are some compatibility issues with MS Office but for light use you shouldn't have to worry about those.

For email try the email client built into Windows. If you find it to limited try the free Thunderbird.

Sometimes your work has a Microsoft agreement which means you can get it cheaply. Amazon are certainly cheaper. I tried LibreOffice and it did not suit although for £0 it is hard to complain too vigorously.

For basic docs and spreadsheets you could also try Google Docs and Sheets which run in the Cloud.

I use them quite often but also use Libre Office when appropriate.

It all depends on just what you want to do with it. Personally I would never buy MS Office as it is way to advanced for anything I would ever need to do.

    Try before you buy.
  • If you've got a work email address then put it into email box on this page and see if you're entitled to use Microsoft Home User Program.

If so then you get Office 2019 (download) for £11.99

    Your options are:

Original Microsoft Office [have to pay]

Microsoft Office online [free with limited features, but works for most people]

Libre Office [free and compatible with Word, Excel, Power Point]

If your documents are not too complex then I'd say give Libre Office a try.
Happiness is buying an item and then not checking its price after a month to discover it was reduced further.

    Fixed that for you. ;)

Had mine from eBay. Much cheaper and no issues if you're careful who you buy from.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.
