Repainting/Modernising wooden furniture. Ideas needed.

Options
Hi.

I have a black wooden sideboard which I purchased several year ago. It is made of pine and the manufacturers most likely spray painted it black. It has a matt black finish

I would like to update/modernise it to fit into our new decor and also because some parts of the black paint have come away. Also as it's a matt finish it easily picks up finger marks.

I would like to keep it black but want to touch the paintwork up and maybe put some kind of protective varnish over it. I don't want it looking too glossy but I would like a more sturdy finish that can withstand heavy use.

What are the best ways/materials to do this job?

Thanks
