Hire car woes!

Syncopated
Hello all and thanks in advance.
My mrs was involved in a car accident (other driver at fault) the car was a write off and i was given a hire car.
The accident was over 6 months ago and we have just found out whilst at the secure yard it was taken to it was subject to arson! so we lost a few personal effects.
Our insurer has advised us they will pay £2000 for the car but hasn't got back to us on our personal effects yet, in the mean time the hire company (Kindertons) have called constantly wanting their hire car back saying if we don't return it they will tell the police its stolen and send them round as the insurance company owe them over 20k for the 6months hire!!!
If we give them the car back it will leave her without a car which she needs as we have a 2 year old and we are unable to purchase a replacement car until we get paid out.
can anyone advise if what the hire company are trying to do is right as shes worried the police will turn up!

Who arranged the hire car?
Is your claim not being passed to the other driver's insurance?0 -
Hey,
Our insurance is by a company called tradex, they have outsourced the car hire to kindertons and the personal injury to jigsaw law. It's very confusing!
We have to chase all 3 as they are bloody useless!
Previously I was with esure and you just dealt with them and it was sorted none of this chasing around0 -
Have you received the payment yet for your written off car?
Are you a motor trader?0
