Is there anything I can do?

Here goes....

I put a deposit down for a flat at the start of October and was told that it would probably be the end of October before it was fit for letting which was fine, however I phoned the letting agents the other week and was told it would probably be the first week in November which was fine..however.. after viewing the flat again recently we noticed that it was a pig sty after the workmen had been in it and we are now told that they cant give us a moving date because it still needs work done to it and generally cleaned up - is there anything I can do about this? I dont want to lose my desposit but at the same time they are taking the biscuit and I am getting very impatient with them.

(hope all that makes sense)

Did you get anything in writing about the moving in date?

You could just ask for your money back given that the landlord has messed you about & see what happens. You could try making (or at least threatening) to make a complaint to the Ombudsman.

"Mrs. Pench, you've won the car contest, would you like a triumph spitfire or 3000 in cash?" He smiled.
Mrs. Pench took the money. "What will you do with it all? Not that it's any of my business," he giggled.
"I think I'll become an alcoholic," said Betty.

You could write to them asking them for either return of deposit, or a written agreement with an acceptable moving in date, with a penalty clause for each weeks delay after this date!
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

    There's no harm in trying!

You need to turn it the other way round and ask "if they can really do that?!?"

  • What do you mean by "paid a deposit"? How much, relative to the rent e.g. a month's rent or more? Do you have any paperwork in relation to the deposit?

I assume you've signed no agreement.

"penalty clause "? - i would never offer a house to anyone who tried threatening me with penalty clauses even before they had even moved in - what a daft idea
