Help! Broken front door handle

Hi there,
I'm wondering if anyone can help me? This is my first time posting so I'm sorry if I use the wrong terminology.
Yesterday I was coming in through my front door & I lifted up the handle in order to lock the door and heard a click & now the handle is able to do a 180 & I cannot open the door. On turning the key it appears to lock and unlock the door but as the handle won't work the door is firmly shut. I'm able to use the back door to get in and out of the house so don't need to get it sorted urgently so therefore haven't needed to call a locksmith.
I was hoping I could sort this problem out myself but I don't know whether it's just the handle or the lock as well. On a background note for the last year or so the handle is a bit difficult to lift up in order to lock It. Get the key to turn it normally takes a couple of attempts. I want to hope that means it is just the handle that needs replacing. Can anyone offer me any advice on how I should go about fixing this problem?!
Thanks in advance for any advice given!!

Probably just the handle - easy to pick up a pair on ebay, or at a diy store. Check the measurement as there are different sizes, but easy to fit new ones0

Thanks, to measure the hand that from the handle to key hole?0

Assuming it's for a upvc door it sounds like it could simply be the door lever spring cassette - https://ebay.us/1L2Jlc
Take the handle off from the inside and have a look.0 -

Could be the gearbox if you have been forcing the handle. Some examples and an explanation:

In this case I would suggest getting a joiner (probably cheaper than a locksmith) to fit a new one of the correct size. As your lock is sticking the door hinges will probably need adjusting or you could break the replacement.0 -
I've used dgsupplyline.co.uk and they were very knowlegeable and helpful.
They have a good range of windows and door parts0 -
replaced the handles on dd's conservatory. Easy. 2 screws to remove from inside and replace.0
