Using laptop on Holiday

Any help please

We have a holiday in France. We can use the wireless internet conection in the apartment.

If we do can anyone look at all the files on my computer?
I asume we do not go on any confidential sites.

Is there any other things we should be aware of.
What questions do we ask reception to try and keep things as safe as possible.

Are there any programes that may help other than zonealarm avg se.

Thanks or any help

Hi John (like the username!! :) )

It depends on how their wireless is setup. If it is unsecured then you need to be VERY careful what you do. If it is secured then i would suggest turning off File & Printer Sharing >
In Windows 98 or ME, open the Network applet from the Control Panel, click on the File and Printer Sharing button, and uncheck both. Windows 2000 or XP users should right-click on Network Neighborhood and choose Properties. Find the network card (labeled Local Area Connection by default), right-click on it, and select Properties. Uncheck File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks. Repeat for additional network adapters.

The you should be ok :)

  • I assume we will have to pay a fee for using the conection. They then will ,I assume give us a pasword. Does this mean it is fairly secure?

It is only secure if you have to enter some sort of Network Encryption key, either WEP or WPA. Best to ask them.
