That may be another reason why that's the way we normally do it - so that the question doesn't arise of going into someone else's garden in the first place. There is a high level of acceptance one doesn't even think of going in someone else's garden (as it's their private property).

is that not a contradiction of what you said above?

    !!!!!!?

The posts are surely holding the panels up and not on one side. I mean what idiot would do that? It makes no sense and surely makes maintanance a pain? I cannot even consisder someone would do sure a thing.

And how can a fence panel have a bad side? They may not be exactly the same but there should not be a bad side. Maybe you all just get a spray can out and insult your neighbours and that is the bad side.

Disclaimer. Yes I know these both happen, however I think anyone who would do such a thing is an idiot on both counts. Don't try to save hardly anything on putting up something that really should be illigal!

Not all fences are made with panels however.

Ours has posts to which 3 rails are fixed horizontally, then vertical boards are fixed to these. So the “nice” side of the fence faces into our garden, and as Norman Castle said, the whole job is done from our garden.
  • I may get in trouble if my next house purchase goes through as I'm replacing the whole perimeter with close board fencing as most of what's there is rotten

I could be problem neighbour from day one, although the alternative of not doing it could result in my 2 pigs trotting into their gardens and eating everything in sight

Thankfully only one neighbour in the distance
  • In my part of the country, that's how it's done; I've always assumed it's the same everywhere . Guess there's not really a national norm though.

    Thanks:T

I thought it was the norm across the country before I moved - and hence I'm pointing out there do seem to be different regional norms.

I'd have thought having the posts on the inside was so people outside wouldn't be climbing it so easily...??? - Else it would be like having a castle with handily created ladders running up the outside of the walls... :P

Does your neighbour have an issue with a 6 foot fence instead of a 4 foot one? newer bigger fence vs smaller older fence seems a fair exchange - as long as it's built on their side of boundary - if its about the fenceposts - double-side them.
