They're encrypted on the drive in the Sky box. One way I can think of is to record to a stand alone dvd/hard drive recorder, or buy a capture card for your PC/laptop0

Only if they were on an encrypted channel. It just saves the incoming steam with no modifications (which is why you need an active sub to watch encrypted stuff later).
Of course all my knownledge is pre sky Q, but I doubt much has changed.
Software to copy things off the drive is available. I used it when I updated the HD in my box. The non encrypted transport streams play fine in the right software. The encrypted stuff not so much. Though All I wanted was to keep stuff from the old drive I had not watched yet.
All seems far too much effort these days. Just use netflix etc!0 -
You can connect an external device to the SCART output and copy it off that way but this will result in a deterioration of picture quality and all HD will obviously go out the window. HDMI to HDMI can be done but its complicated.
But yes you can't just copy the recording file(s) from the drive, they are encrypted at source (ie when uplinked to the satellites), decrypted on playback by the box.0
