You could have kept the problem and posted the workaround, might have been useful to others.

it was long and convaluted, but here is the abridged version.

In Feb next year, I'm taking a flight with my family.
When we depart, my daughter is 11, a child. Whilst away, she becomes 12, in airlines eyes, an adult.

I couldn't (& wouldn't) book a one way child ticket and a one way adult ticket to bring her back, so bought her an adult ticket both ways.

I'm filling in the APIS (Advanced Passenger Information) data online, but the airlines website won't let me proceed, as it refuses to accept her date of birth, because that makes her a child and she is travelling on an adult ticket - and you can't vary the DOB on the APIS, as it wouldn't match her passport.

Being the cautious chap that I am, I like to get as much done, as early as possibe

The workaround is downloading a form from the airline, printing it, filling it out and presenting it at the checkin desk - presumably they have a way of inputting the necessary data manually that doesn't cause any issues with the APIS sysytem.

    Murph

p.s. ironically, the downloaded, printed version, doesn't ask for DOB on it, even though DOB is on the list of compulsory information.
