I am just back from Norway where you can hear cars coming with earplugs on as they have metal studs in the tyres.

Regarding the Duster, what would also be helpful to know is:

    - Petrol vs Diesel. I’d prefer the former due to the environmental (and longevity) concerns of the latter, but I’m still open at this stage.
    - mpg. I currently drive an Skoda Fabia Estate 2003, 1.2, petrol). How would a newish Duster compare?
    - Are there any particular models, eras, etc to go for or avoid?

    Huge thanks

The Duster is getting new, modern petrol engines in the Spring - TCe 1.3 turbos with 130 or 150BHP (150 on top of range only) so might be an idea to hold out for these if time permits. You can order these now, but not in 4x4 - these will be coming later in the Summer.

If you're buying from the current batch of engines then I'd go Diesel as the torque is much better than the current petrol engine.

Yes. It's old and creaky but I like it.

If they have 3PMSF, then they ARE full winter tyres.

Mine's an ex-minibus with the 1.9 petrol wasserboxer. When new, it used to be used for picking up the people and towing the balloon trailer after balloon flights.

I should sell it really, but I've had it over a decade and am rather attached to it.

If they have the 'snowflake on the mountain' symbol they are full winter tyres.

All 3PMSF winters will be M+S.
Not all M+S are 3PMSF winters.

M+S should be treated with caution. Some are almost as good as winters, others are dreadful in snow. The mud terrain tyres on my Land Rover are marked M+S. Excellent tyres for muddy conditions and general 4x4 use but useless in anything other than deep snow.

Look for positive winter/snow reviews before buying.

Some "all-season" tyres have the three peak snowflake symbol but don't claim to be winter tyres. Vredestein Quatrac 5 and Cooper Discoverer AT3 '4S' to name two examples.

I'm after a set of the latter.
