Bank not paying Standing Order

Hello
My husband has a standing order set up from his current account into our joint account which pays the bills. We call it the "House Account". His bank Lloyds is taking the money from his account but it isn't being paid into the "House Account". This has happened on multiple occasions and caused us to go into an overdraft too when we haven't noticed quick enough. What can we do? The bank say they don't know why that is happening. And the whole idea of Standing Orders is that you don't have to check they are being paid each month. Is anyone else having/had a similar problem? Its frustrating.
TIA

Have you made a formal complaint in writing? If not, do so.

In the meantime, credit the House Account with enough to meet the bills for a couple of months.

And if the money is shown as debited from Lloyds, where does it go?

And does it bounce back again?

Is the house joint account t also with Lloyds? Same branch ie sort code?

As above, when it doesn't arrive where does it go? Bounce back to your husband's account. Or just arrives late?

If the accounts are both at Lloyds it won't actually be a Standing Order (although the set up process may be the same) as SOs are only used between banks, it will be a Lloyds internal transfer and won't use the same payment method. However, it should still be pretty foolproof so he does need to make a formal complaint, although it would also be sensible for one of you to check that the money is in the joint account on the day the transfer is supposed to happen.

I make regular payments between two Lloyds accounts and they are shown under Standing Orders.

    I've never had a problem.
  • OP are you sure that there are sufficient cleared funds for the transfer to go through?
If the funds are not there at the start of the day - then I think that's it - it won't go through.

There is no other rational reason why a standing order goes out one month but not another.

But they can't actually be Standing Orders, because SOs use the Faster Payment system to transfer between banks. Lloyds probably list them as SOs because of their similarity to them and because it was easier for them to do that than create another category.

That's not quite correct. If there are not sufficient funds at the start of the day for the SO to go through, then they send a text with a prompt to fund the account and they make another attempt around 15:00. I have a Club Lloyds account and I have had a few cases when that has happened to me. But yes, generally the lack of funds is the most probable reason.

  • The way ClareOvaltine writes about 'his bank' suggests the joint account is not with Lloyds.

Clare, Are you able to sit down with your husband in front of a computer and get him to log in to his online account and examine his account together, so that you can also see how the money is being taken out (as you have suggested it is) and potentially where it is going to, and also to see whether it is bouncing back?

I would expect him to be jumping up and down with rage at the way his money is disappearing out of his account but not arriving in your joint account. You haven't said, but he doesn't seem concerned about the bank allegedly saying they don't know what's happening; it seems it is only you who is sufficiently concerned to try and get things resolved.

Do you trust him? Do you think he may have cash-flow problems but won't admit it?
