Hi

I'm trying work out how much gas my bpiler uses per hr without much luck

Gas reading before turning heating on 36838 m3

And after reading is 36840

My kwh charge is 3.744p per unit

And a standard daily charge of 15.65p per day ?

Can anyone help calculate what i have used per hr ?

Thankyou

  • You have used 2 units on the meter.
    Using the calculator at https://www.ukpower.co.uk/home_energy/gas_meter_readings?type=11.186772586666667&units=2
you has used 22.3735kWh of gas which is 84p of gas

That's what I've worked out as well - you can disregard the standing charge beacause you have to pay it whether you use your gas or not.

Bear in mind though that just turning your boiler on for an hour probably means it's going full bore untill the house has come up to temperature which may take a couple of hours until the thermostats kick in and reduce it's running times.

Some boilers also modulate the burner rather than just turning it on and off so
you'll get a more meaningful estimate of it's hourly cost if you checked it's consumption over a longer period, say six hrs and divided the cost by six.

Long term monitoring gives you a much better idea of your consumption & cost than a quick one hour burst. You also need to check the meter properly and take the decimal points into account especially over such a short time.

A display of two whole units could actually be anywhere between 36838.00 to 36840.99 which is 2.99 cu.m or 36838.99 to 36840.00 which is only 1.01 cu/m. Which could mean a reading error of near enough 2 cu.m

IOS App for 99p called Meters. Set it up and enter two meter readings and it will do all the sums and calculate how much you owe.

This may be a bit out of date but Your Loop gives gas reading...

Great piece of kit but... you cannot have gas monitor itself - must have at least the electric monitor. Quite old and so may not be available - but web-site is still fully functional.

You dont need a smart meter, just read the meter yourself every day and put it into a spreadsheet or as Hengus says get an app for your smart phone. Gas smart meters can only send out data once every half an hour and need to be linked back to a smart electric meter to provide an output to an in home display.

Most energy company will only give you yesterdays totals, rather than real time of half hourly monitoring and knowing that your boiler is flogging away for 10 minutes or so once a hour isn't very useful.

There are monitors available but if you get into the habit of a regular monitoring and recording you'll have a much better idea of what is going on than an instant readout from a meter. You'll also know whether your energy saving measures are working as you should see a delcine in your consumption.
