Hello everyone
Unfortunately our 6 year old Ariston washing machine appears to have engine problems and has stopped working, so it's time to say goodbye.
We now need a new washing machine, as a matter of urgency.
What would you recommend - mid price £330-£430, as economical and reliable as possible. I've been looking at reviews and am confused.
Would love to hear your opinions/ reviews.
Many thanks in advance.

With that sort of budget you're better off looking at either Samsung, Bosch or LG. Worth having a look hotukdeals.com to see if there are any good deals around at the moment.0

You can also try looking on AO.com , they generally have good offers but are online only.0

This one looks promising - https://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/lg-steamtm-f4j6vy2w-9kg-washing-machine-with-1400-rpm-white-a-rated-429-ao-part-of-lg-5-year-warranty-models-3137874
but if you can hold on until after Xmas the sales quite often throw up some good offers on white goods.0 -
We have an LG DirectDrive (sorry don't actually know the model number) - looks like the one in the picture on the hotdeals website lin, although no steam function.
It's pretty quiet when washing. Not so much when spinning but quieter than the machine I had before.
They're on to a good thing being able to download wash programmes and load them on to the machine. However, all the downloadable programmes are already on my machine as a set programme so a bit rubbish there. You'll also find the LG app has bad reviews. I use it occasionally, but only to see how many washes my machine has left before it wants a "tub clean" - which I don't need to do as it'll flash up when it's due anyway.
The LED screen can sometimes buzz. I don't know if it happens when there's a heavier load, a lot more things lit up or what, but I can occasionally hear it.
I promise washing machines just need two dials: time and temperature.
The time would be limited to something like 30 mins minimum.0 -
Not researched the market for a while but this came up on here very recently.
My opinion is that you should avoid the mid price point like this - as you won't get something much more reliable than a cheapy.
For example I bought a £200 Beko and it's been great for over 5 years. If it goes wrong I'll replace it rather than spend £100 on a new motor/drum or whatever.
Or buy something like a top end Miele, that *should* be made with better quality components, and at least if you are spending 1/8th of its value on fixing in future it's worthwhile, rather than 1/2 or 1/3 of the value.
I think the mid range washers are far from "money saving".0 -

After a bad experience with a machine purchased from Comet with a Comet '5 yr warranty' that wasn't worth the paper it was written on, we went mad and bought a Miele in 2004 and despite been installed off balance for the first 12 years of its life, been moved to a different part of the kitchen and then been moved to our new house is still going strong.
Yes, it cost us £800 (free 10 yr warranty at the time) but that worked out as £57 a year to purchase and going down every year we have it. Been a family of 4 it is used every day and wife cant comprehend that its supposed to have a weight limit....0 -
Dear OP
Most washing machines are tosh these days.
Go for a heavy load one as it usally lasts a bit longer.
Then seriously consider a 5 year warrnty, don't buy it from the seller but coop is cheaper all round.
Importantly, measure the opening for new machine as heights and dephts vary.
NB - we look after our washing machines and dont over load but most have a breakdown within two years.
PS, if you are happy with my response, please thank me.0 -
We had a new Zanussi machine last year to replace a Beko. The Zanussi is better built and more reliable than the Beko by some margin. The drum is much smaller though despite being rated for the same load of washing. The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.0

For balance I've an 18 year old Bosch that I bought for around £300 that's still going strong. The only thing I've had to do with it over that time is replace the motor brushes about 6 years ago.0

Our first Miele needed 1 drive belt in the 23 years it lasted. When the controller packed in, the part was still available (Miele guarantee spares availability for at least 20 years after they stop production of a particular model) but repair cost would have been £350, so we spent another £100 and got a new Miele, uses 1/2 the water of the old one, 10 years on it's still going strong.0
