Modem extension wire

I live in a big house and want to move my pc (I regret not buying a laptop now  ) to a warmer room. Will a modem extension cable work?Or is it a waste of time? I think my modem is wi-fi capable but I don't trust wi-fi because the man from the real hustle doesn't!

Wifi is fine, provided you encrypt it with WPA-PSK\tkip, and a long key. You may be using wifi and be exposed now if you haven't turned it off on the router or encrypted it.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0

I've just watched that real hustle video on youtube. Those people either didn't have security enabled at all, or used WEP which you can hack in about two minutes.
Like albertross says, use WPA and you'll be fine. If you have an old router/modem/accesspoint that only supports WEP, then don't use the wireless functionality.0 -
Which modem/router do you have? make/model number? If it has ethernet ports (standard network ports) then I would recommend using that.
I say this because whenever I moved my modem/router away from the master socket where my BT line enters the house using an extension cable, it had problems picking up the DSL/Internet line.0 -

So your entire decision about Wifi is based on a moron with all the technical ability of a Tesco shelf stacker who deliberately made a sensationalist program and made a point of making sure they only tried to get into open and WEP encrypted networks. I notice that there wasn't one single instance of them cracking a WPA secured Wifi network and the PC of the muppet in the program only got p0wned because the muppet had remote desktop turned on.
So in short, Joe Clueless uses crap encryption and doesn't secure his computer properly.
I can guarantee nobody will get into mine and they can sit there trying to hard crack it but they'll take about 120 years to finally do it.0 -
Where does remote desktop fall into it Conor? Were they not just using something similar to ethereal to sniff the network? Im assuming they just cracked the WEP, got an IP address through DHCP and sniffed away to their hearts consent. Never tried it myself tbh so dont know the ins and outs.
Your tesco shelf stacker comment certainly made me chuckle :beer:0 -
Yes you can use an extension for your modem as long as you only use two wires.
Most bought extension cables have all the pins connected, up to 6, and will not work with broadband as the additional wiring picks up noise and kills the signal.
As another poster has said its better to extend the Ethernet to your PC, if you want to use an extension buy some cable (preferably CAT5) and an extension socket and wire it up yourself.
This article tells you how:http://www.dslzoneuk.net/socket.php?type=htmlThat gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
Calm down conor! No need to be rude.wHAT PROG ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT? I read his quote in a magazine.
Penrhyn, on the back of my modem it says Netgear 54 Mbps wireless ADSL Modem router
Don't buy a telephone extension cable, buy an Ethernet cable to extend the distance to your PC. By far the best solution. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
Is the wireless light on, on the front of your router? Did you encrypt it when it was installed?Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0

I know, my point is that it is enabled by default, so you may be offering your BB connection and files to the neighbours already, without knowing it, just like the people in the real hustle programme. Wireless is enabled and unencrypted by default.
goto www.routerlogin.com
admin
password (or sky if sky BB)
wireless settings to check.
untick enable wireless and click apply to turn wireless offEver get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
