Car insurance comparison sites quote goes up with increase No claims Bonus (NCB)

Hi All,

My wifes car insurance runs out in 3 weeks time so I have been doing the rounds on all the car insurance comparison sites. I accidentally put 1 years NCB for a 2003 1.6 VW Golf, with son as new driver. I got the following quotes:-

Confused - £964 with Hasting Direct
CompareMarket - £1189 with Hastings Direct
Moneysupermarket - £1124 with Hastings Direct

Once I got my renewal back from admiral I noticed I had 2 years NCB.

So I hastily thought great i am going to get cheaper insurance. So I went back to each quote and changed it to 2 years ... and guess what .. it didn't go down it went up :(

Moneysupermarket - £1367 with Hastings Direct
Confused - £1163 with Hasting Direct
CompareMarket - £1450 with Hastings Direct

So I thought this is a conspiracy with the comparison sites. I went back to the link for the initial £964 quote and proceeded to Hasting Direct web site and made the change there to 2yrs NCB and it errored out.

Am I right in thinking this should not be allowed and I should be complaining to someone (some insurance omsbudsman)?

Thanks

Ayaz

  • Price comparison sites prices will change daily.

Did you get the quotes for 1yrs NCB and 2yrs NCB on the same day?
  • mak, prices can literally changes by the hour. One explanation is that these insurers may think you're manipulating the data to try and get a cheaper quote. I'm afraid it's a bit complicated. Best way to get a good price is to ring Hastings Direct with your first quote and explain the situation. Suspect it would be difficult for them not to provide you with a further discount
  • As there is no obligation to provide a discount for no claims bonus any complaint is futile.
Alongside this, the level of discount is a commercial decision which each insurer takes, FOS won't entertain complaints regarding rating decisions.

In practice, most if not all insurers rate on NCB otherwise they would just not be competitive.

As suggested contact Hastings and explain, they may provide additional discount once you've explained.

TBH Hastings doesn't have a great reputation so you may consider it a 'lucky escape' (although, to balance the picture out I've had insurance with them, and claimed, and it was fine).

You've probably triggered their fraud detection, they think you are a dodgey customer now so have put up prices

If so it seems an incredibly small increase for someone now suspected of fraud. :)

Could be the added cost of performing validation checks on the policy.

  • Thanks for all the replies and yes I made the change on a different day, and yes I am intending on ringing them up with the initial quote.
