Burning smell

Could anyone give me some advice on how to track down the cause of a smell in my downstairs loo?
It smells a bit like a burning smell.
The loo literally has a toilet, a small sink, and an extractor fan that is fitted to the pull cord light. There is also a window.
I can smell the smell even though the light / fan aren't on.
It isnt there all the time, and sometimes it is stronger than others.
We have recently had electrical work done in the kitchen which adjoins the downstairs loo, but if it were this, surely we would smell it in the kitchen rather than the cloakroom?
Any thoughts please?
Thanks in advance.

Get the electrician back ASAP . If not , you may have to contact the fire brigade . Sounds like something wasn't done properly .
Hope it gets sorted0 -

Could do if the motor is starting to break down, do you have a isolation switched fuse controlling the fan you can switch off. There are more questions than answers :shhh: :silenced:WARNING ! May go silent for unfriendly repliesPlease excuse me Spell it MOST times:A UK Resident :A0 -
The burning smell could hang around for a while; as above I'd isolate the extractor and see if it goes away.
What work was done in the kitchen?0 -
Yes there is an isolator switch, ill try that.
The problem being, there only seems to be me that can smell it.
We had a new socket put on for an extractor fan on the wall adjoining the toilet, as well as other work for undercounter lights.
The work has been done a couple of weeks though, and I have only noticed the smell this last day or so.0 -
What kind of light do you have? If its a fluro tube sort, check the ballast.0
