Why do you think many people buy extended guarantees when they buy good brands EG, Sony, Bose, Mercedes, Audi, Apple, Tag, Boss, etc? Items will break down and that is a fact of life so for a piece of mind buy an extended guarantee.

Personally I still consider a ctv as a fairly big ticket item and wouldn't buy one with anything less then a 5 year warranty.

OP rather than concentrating on the rights and wrongs of your existing tv, you really do need to consider whether it would be better just to accept the tv has failed well out of warranty, learn from that and replace it with one that carries a better warranty - there are plenty about at very reasonable prices and with 5/6 year warranties.

And please, can you post in sentences/paragraphs and not lumps of text that are hard to read.

I just hope that whoever administers my small claim has just bought a television and that they quite reasonably expect it to become obsolete before it breaks down.

I would expect them to throw it out because you have not followed the correct priocedure and got a report.

You have also not mentioned how much the TV was. SONY is certainly not a good (TV) make anymore.

However you may win if the price is low and amazon just do not bother. But you would also get a lifetime ban from amazon for yuourself and anyone they suspect is operating an account on your behalf (wheather they are or not).

Is it worth it for a company not doing anything wrong?

Are you sure it didnt come with a 3 year warranty from Sony as i seem to remember most bravias did as standard? You can check it here:

I looked into this extensively over the last two or 3 weeks. That might be the law, but how can a company get away with saying that a Sony television won't last more than 3 years?

Clearly you have not looked into it extensively or if you have you have badly misunderstood the law.

A flat screen TV failing after 3 yrs is not unusual.

An engineer's report could cost as much as the refund (possibly more). You need to balance the the chances of the engineer finding or not finding an inherent fault. Because if no inherent fault, you will have wasted your money
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales
  • Bezos bank account needs replenishinbg. Built in obsolence. Considering Amazon is flogging Amazon Fire TV this is disgustingly helpful.
I would just use a smart stick of prefered brand? to smart up my tv but am uncomfortable with the implications. Corporate spying through camera or other means? My super large tv is not smart but surely usb port to put in smart tv stick?
  • Amazon will use corporate lawyers and law to make the law serve its commercial purposes.
I think this is scandelous and thank you for telling us. I always take a consumner prog guided view of ads, corporations. So I am difficult to advertise too because I am too busy reading the scant small print which says if I buy this fantastic lifestyle freedom car I dont own the barstard.
  • Just be glad you don't live in the US - they are lucky to get a 6 month guarantee!

An engineer's report is likely no more than £50 and which would be refundable if it went in your favour.
