Hi everyone.I was hoping someone could give me some advice. My aunt is 64 has long standing spinal problems which affect her movement and strength of her arms and she has limited mobilty however can walk slowly. She also has double incontinence because of her spinal problems.
This was caused by an industrial accident for which she receives a life time award of Industrial accident benefit..She has been on ESA support group since the accident 6 years ago.She has received a form to review her ESA which is expected, however she has recently been changed from DLA to Pip for which she received enhanced care and the lower mobilty component for 10 years.
My question is can she ask them to look at her pip assessment for evidence as she sent in all the evidence she had and would have to get copies of the paperwork yet again. She also has the PIP assessment from the nurse who examined her and this states her problems are long term and will not change.Do they refer to pip reports or will we have to get all new evidence from afresh.Thankyou so much.

No. They're different benefits with different criteria.
I'm afraid you'll have to send all the medical information again. Don't rely on them contacting anyone, and fill in the form as thoroughly as if it were a first claim.Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.0 -
PIP and ESA are two separate benefits. PIP is for care and mobility needs and ESA is about capability for work. This is borne out by the fact you can claim PIP and also work full time.
Is your aunt on contribution based ESA?
To get into the ESA support group you have to meet at least one of the support group descriptors.
They are here:
https://www.benefitsandwork.co.uk/employment-and-support-allowance/esa-glossary/1353-support-group-descriptors
Would your aunt meet the descriptor about incontinence (number 8, I think)
Someone will be along to confirm that they do not use evidence from a PIP assessment so she will have to get her evidence together again.
Personally, I think it wouldn't hurt to put in the 'Other Information' a little about her award of PIP quoting the points scored for the 'incontinence' question if this backs up her claim for that support descriptor. If it doesn't back her claim for the support group descriptor then I wouldn't mention it. (I would need to check whether PIP and ESA support group descriptors are similar on this)
Which ESA support descriptor did your aunt meet when she was awarded it last time? Or was she awarded it under reg 35?0 -
Hi,unfortunately we do not know which descriptor qualified her for the support group. Its just recently I have been reading these boards and noticed you could ask for a report.Which we did for PIP.When she was assessed first time round for ESA we never got a report as we didnt know you could.
I reckon that her bowel incontinence would put in in the support group alone after reading the descriptors .
She is in contributory ESA by the way does this make a difference.0 -
You mention that your aunt is already 64 years old - does she expect to draw her state pension some time next year?
Has she checked her forecast?

I agree that PIP and ESA are different benefits but some of the criteria for the Support Group descriptors are the same for PIP descriptors.pmlindyloo wrote: »

I was very recently re-assessed for ESA but i really didn't have a lot of evidence to support my claim. I've been in the Support Group for ESA for mobilising for over 6 years. I also claim Enhanced mobility PIP for the moving around part.
I sent my PIP assessment report and decision letter as part of my evidence because i thought they will either use it or they won't. I also pointed out my PIP award when i filled in the ESA50 form.
They did actually use it and the HCP mentioned my PIP award during my assessment.
The evidence used to make the recommendation was mentioned in the assessment report too. Decision was remain in the Support Group for mobilising.
My opinion is, yes it's worth sending the PIP report as evidence.0 -
Thankyou so much for the advice everyone.I am going to sit down and go through the form with my aunt tomorrow to help her fill it in.I must say I have sympathy for sick and disabled people who have these forms to repeatedly fill in.Its a mammoth task by the look of it when you are well but when you are poorly it must be even harder.
Although I do realise these reassments are necessary they certainly dont make things easy for sick people.Once again thankyou.0 -
New to this so not sure if this is in the right place but looking for help
I have been on long term sick for coming up to a year before that I was always fit and healthy
But of late I have found that I have lots of medical problems one being HCM, irregular heartbeat high blood pressure borderline diabetes and a pain in my chest and arm that never seems to go away
Now work had to canx my contract and my partner earns £100 over the threshold so can not claim job seekers so have claimed contribution based ESA and supports group this has been ordered but there's no time scale for the support group is this correct?
I have also applied for Pip I've just had my assessment on the 1st of December they received the paperwork 2 Days Later does anybody know at present the time scale for a decision to be made on PIP
Thanks in advance as need to know as taken forever to just get to this point0 -
It would have been better to have started your own thread with your question. Asking questions on other peoples thread can become confusing.New to this so not sure if this is in the right place but looking for help

If you're saying you're in the Support Group on Contributions based ESA then, it's not limited to 365 days. It's paid for as long as you remain in this group.
For your PIP. There's no time scales to any decisions. You can ring DWP to ask for a copy of the assessment report. This will give you some idea what the decision is likely to be as they mostly go with the report.0 -
Thanks for your help with my question was not sure how to start a thread on here but it's fine now as got the esa sorted and will ring PIP tomorrow to ask for assessment letter that was done on the 1st
Thanks again0 -
