uPVC front door repair

Options
We've been having problems with our UPVC door for ages and finally got a locksmith out today to have a look. He immediately said it was terrible and started dismantling door and advised that the whole internal panel for the 3 way multilock needed changing. He said this would be £175 plus fitting and VAT to altogether with this visit included it's £360. I feel a bit sick. I that a fair price? I asked for some movement on the part but he says there's nothing he can do. Any advise?

if that's the mechanism that is fitted into the end of the door . theyre normally around £ 60/£ 70 to buy but some are a specialist type , most are available or can be changed to something that is available , £360 is high to fix it . If it needed a complete system to begin with , Hard to call

Sounds about right, actually cheap if you are in London. Without looking at it, it's difficult to call.

Our lock started to play up, looked on google, got the lock for 25 quid a Yale high security and fittd ourselves took about 15 mins but a lot of youtube vids and looking for the lock nd measuring it.

    £360 I’d feel sick as well - that’s a brand new door!

As the poster above mentioned if it’s the long mechanism on the inside of the door - it’s quite easy to take off and find a replacement part once you identify where the problem is.

I had a similar problem last year when the mechanism for the front door was jamming. I took it off and to a specialist shop who identified the problem straight away.

Didn’t need to replace the entire thing – just the main locking mechanism – cost £26. If the entire strip needed replacing it would’ve cost £70-80.
