Is the builder liable?

    ^ This.

Downstairs would claim from their own insurance, who could then pursue the claim against the plumber, if they so chose. But it would require demonstration (or admission) of negligence on his part - and simply having supplied components that fail quickly is not sufficient.

He might have comprehensive public liability insurance which the neighbour could claim directly from.

Thanks! What I needed to know and what I expected - so it's not his fault, just one of those things.

    Cheers all!!

I paid him by bank transfer? Wasn't a reduced price. He's done loads of work for us in the past, and never had any issues with anything else. His aftercare is great too. So don't want to accuse him of doing anything wrong, as I still can't figure out if it's his fault or not!!

Invoice doesn't really say anything.. just what he did, his address etc and an itemised list of costs.
Great: So write to him asking him to fix and, if he declines and you feel strongly, sue him.

You or him having insurance or not is neither her nor there.

How did you pay & what does invoice say?

If cash, no receipt, price reduced, then own goal....

Why would you query this when OP has made no mention of it being a cash job?

The neighbour can claim on their household insurance who may claim on the plumber's insurance, they may pay out then the claim may get past to the part manufacturer's insurance if the part was proved to be faulty.

For a carpet it probably wont get to the plumbers insurance but if it was a loss into 4 or 5 figures then this is how it would go.

Well this is a money-saving site. Thanks for asking.

And perhaps as I was surprised to be offered by a roofer this morning £50 off for cash. Wife tempted, I declined (her house, I am but a lodger...).

It happens, as we all know fine well, and results in the country & particularly the vulnerable suffering. Tax cheating, a serious problem and way way bigger than benefit fiddling.

    Cheers!
