Loft Stilts, Is this where you screw them onto?

Good afternoon Forum , this is a sort of follow on from my insulation post.

I plan to put in a raised floor whilst insulating the loft, using stilts, I just wanted to know im going to be screwing them in the right parts of the loft.

This is an image of my neighbours loft that has literally no insulation, the layout is the same as mine by the looks of it.

Do I screw the stilts directly onto the beams that are going left to right? and then board up that way, or do I need to add some more wood in between to make it stonger ?

There are so 2 very big beams that go accross the house, if these take weight i could try and get long beams of wood and try and create a platform resting on these.

All of the above is DIY of course.

I have about 70-80Kg of stuff to put up there well spread out.

Any ideas? or am I asking for a roof cave in !

  • Would be interesting to know how any DIYers have created storage space in their loft too, open to ideas !

Why is there a hole in the wall, to the right? It looks like a slot for a wooden strengthening beam.

It looks like you have plenty of headroom, but thought I'd raise the issue. A builder suggested those loft legs to me, but because I have a very low-pitch roof, and a fairly intricate set of cross-beams, I think I'd have had a maximum head height from floor to apex of about 2ft 6 inches if I'd followed his suggestion! Even with flooring on the regular beams, I can't stand up.

The ceiling joists are about 3 inches tall and go across the picture. The larger beam is to support the ceiling joists across a wide span. Fix the loft legs to the ceiling joists. In the centre of the picture where the joists meet there will (hopefully!) be a wall underneath supporting the joists. Photograph and mark on the wall where this is and aim to put heavier items in this area.

Its probably a good idea to do a plan of where pipework and cables are.

Presumably never fitted. Ye olde cowboy builders.

This is actually my next door neighbours loft that I can see through a missing brick, my loft seems to be the same as his, as for that hole, I have an actual beam on my side where as his is missing.

Luckily I don't have an issue with headroom as there plenty of space, as suggested in another post i will put the stilts down on the beams going across the floor, the difference on my loft (not shown in the image) is that i have about 3 "floating" beams of wood about knee height that are attached to the roof, just before the slope meets the house. Will make it a bit tricky to lay board down around/underneath these .

I actually didn't notice the missing beam in my neighbours loft (it is present in mines) I was actually more concerned how they will keep the heat in when the cold starts to bite!
