Help - Natwest credit card charges

I was away from home last month when my Natwest Credit Card bill was due. They had messed up the setting up of my Direct Debit so I paid via online banking and as I didn't have the statement with me I had to guestimate the minimum amount due. I checked what I paid last month (£30) and paid the same again. When I got home I looked at that month's statement and the minimum payment should have been £31. I popped into my local branch to speak to them to see if I should pay the extra £1. The girl at the desk said there was no need as I had made more or less the payment, so me being too trusting left it at that. I have now had my statement through this month and they have charged me £12 for "late payment"! Arghh!

I don't understand how the minimum payment went up by £1 when it's a 0% card and I had not spent on it. Also I don't understand why it's recorded as a "late payment" as I paid on time just £1 less than the amount due. I was going to write to complain because the branch should not have told me not to pay the extra £1, but do you think it's worth it?

Thanks

    Couldn't you have telephoned them?

Had you BT'd to it? Maybe it's the interest on the BT fee (which is treated as a purchase). Do they have a £1 minimum interest charge?

So, you paid £30 on time, and £1 late. Ask yourself again, did you make a late payment?

Your choice, but you're going to have to name the cashier - and give details of the date and time of the conversation I would imagine.

BTW, there's a possibility that the late payment marker won't appear on your credit file, depending on how late you were with the £1 payment, which should be more important to you than the £12 charge.

Finally, most credit cards will withdraw the 0% rate if you breach the T&C's. That's something you might want to check out PDQ!

You can but ask, be polite, humble, explain it all nicely, and hope that you get a nice person at the end of the line - If that fails, try writing a letter. You have nothing to lose but a few pence on your phone bill and the price of a stamp.
