Very minor bump in car, then they had accident!

Hi,

Two weeks ago I had a very very minor bump in my car. I hit the back of another car at literally 0.5-1mph. No damage at all - not even any minor scuffs etc. We were both fine with it & exchanged phone numbers just in case.

Got a phone call yesterday from the guy saying that he was calling just to let me know that he's had a significant crash the day before (so two weeks after we bumped). He was calling just to inform me that he obviously had no intention of ever contacting me re the first bump, as he was in the process of a claim for the second. And that had he ever wanted to look for anything that I did...the back of his car no longer was in any shape to do so anyway!

Should I give my insurance firm a heads up on this? I don't even have his reg number which I know is daft but the first bump was more a 'touch' than anything else. I think he was more worried when he called me that I might have already called my insurance firm, and he clearly doesn't want me to.

Even if I'd caused any minor damage first time, it'd have been a case of me paying up the £50 for eg. bumper clip & then just an FYI letter to insurance firm.

What's the best thing to do here? Any hidden traps I should be aware of?

You break the conditions of your policy by not informing your insurer about this incident.

    So it's your call!

The danger is that the third party comes after you/your insurer over this should there be any problem getting this second bump paid for!
  • Yeah that was my feeling. I'll contact them today.
