Card payment made over the phone not showing on bank statement?

I called up a hotel to pay the remaining balance to a party night over a week ago. The person I spoke to took my long card number and expiry date then paused and said "that's strange, the machine is asking for a pin..." (obviously, I didn't provide this) then I heard a receipt being printed and he said "ok, that's now gone through". He didn't take my CVV number.

This was 10 days ago and the amount is still not showing as being taken from my account. I'm unsure if I should call the hotel and make the payment again as I'm worried it might still come off and I'll end up paying it twice. Is it possible for a card payment to be taken without the CVV and how long should I wait before querying it?

  • I'd ring the bank and ask if it has gone through or maybe in a pending folder before i rang the hotel
If you can keep your head when all around you are losing theirs, its just possible you haven't grasped the situation ;)

If you phone up the hotel (after speaking to your bank), don't offer to make another payment up-front. Ask them to investigate to check what happened at their end and to get back in touch if they find the payment didn't go through. They're the ones who want the money, so it's on them to put the work in to find out what happened.
  • I'd contact the hotel and phrase it in a way where you are merely calling to "confirm your booking and payment", and if the hotel says everything is okay then I'd follow up with your bank - it might be possible that the payment has been held up in the system somewhere, or it could be as you're (probably) expecting and it hasn't gone through right. Definitely wouldn't offer to pay a second time though until you follow up with your bank.

    Yes, it is.
and how long should I wait before querying it?

If they processed it, it should show on your pending transactions immediately (with most banks) and on your account statement within 2-4 days. It would be rare, but not impossible, for it to take longer - and there is no maximum limit. But as a guideline after 7 days I would say a transaction is 'missing'.
