60hz vesa, how do I get my plasma resolution to match my laptop

I'm trying to play video games on my plasma screen T.V. through my laptop and after viewing another thread I got a couple of tips and bought a HDDB15 cable and also an audio cable, the desktop is on the T.V. now which is great but when I load the game the picture on the plasma goes wrong (flickery) and there is no sound either, any advice please my son is gutted and is pestering me to put it right:o
T.V. should be 60hz vesa or something (I saw this quote in the other thread and wondered if it was relavent)
p.s. go easy with the lingo guys I'm not really a techie (laymans terms if poss)
