Seeking advice: stolen car damages property and car

  • Presumably you've checked that the make, model & colour of the car match up with that shown if you do a car status check?

Yes, I've checked this information online and everything matches up.

You inadvertently come across certain individuals who want to make things difficult for no reason. I wish they would be upfront in the beginning which would save a lot of time and unnecessary hassle.

Nevertheless, I’m confident a settlement will be reached.
  • Could it be a cloned vehicle?

The police officers explicitly told me it was a stolen vehicle. If they had found out afterwards that it was cloned, it would’ve been their duty to inform me. I'm sure they will have details of the VIN number to satisfy any disputes from the owner of the stolen car. The case was closed on the day of the incident, and I haven’t received any further correspondence from the police since.

I've waited 10 weeks for a police report.... and 10 months.

Thanks for sharing this. The first seems a more reasonable timeframe but the latter is beyond comprehension.

I've gotten in touch with the police authority about the issue and they've told me to tell my insurance company to call them up in a specific department to find out what's happening with the report - as if they haven't been doing that for the last 3 months :/
  • The police will release a copy of their report to your insurance company or anyone else having a legitimate need for it, upon a written request for the report and the payment of a fee, which is now usually in the region of £150.

They usually won't release the copy of the report for civil purposes until they have either completed investigations and are taking no further action, or that a prosecution has been completed.

So depending on what has happened since the police collared the driver will dictate how soon the report is available.
