Debt forwarded to debt collector - is damage already done?

I have private medical insurance with AXA with an excess of £100.
I got some treatment at a Nuffield Health centre and then Nuffield wrote a letter to me saying to pay, FINAL DEMAND. This was the first letter I got and it said I had 7 days to pay. So I paid it immediately via bank transfer but didn't realize that it did not go through. I spoke to my bank and there is no record of it. Joy.
So today I received a debt collection letter from Icon Collections International Ltd and it says:
"We have been instructed by Nuffield Health to assist them with the collection of your overdue patient account.
If you are covered by private medical insurance, you must contact your provider without further delay to advise them of the default that has incurred on your policy."
Then it says how I can pay and that if I don't I will go to court.
Also the amount owed is not £100. They have now put it up to £132.
I want to minimize the effect will have on my score and can pay right away obviously any way they want. Should I just pay the whole thing off asap via the debt collector? I don't feel it is fair to now charge me more than the original excess. Can I phone and offer £100, or do you think this would cause more issues?
If I phone Nuffield Health first thing Monday and offer to pay over the phone or however they want, will this cancel the debt collection, or will they just say, no you can't pay us now, you have to go via debt collection.
Should I only deal via the debt collection now?
Is damage already done to my credit score? They talk about a default...does this mean my "Nuffield policy" (which I don't really have, it's just the place I had treatment at) has defaulted and I can't ever use Nuffield again? I pay for my private medical via work and I am not behind as it comes out of wages and goes to AXA. Will my AXA main policy now be cancelled? What if I don't tell AXA anything as the debt is with Nuffield?
If it is all cancelled will I still have to pay for it for the rest of my year at work every month but not get the benefit?
I'm annoyed that it sounds like due to one payment that did not go through just from the one letter I had, I may now suffer a "default" being on my credit rating for 6 years. I am 38 years old and never missed a payment or had this happen. I'm concerned that it may affect me getting credit cards/loans/mortgage in the future.

Pay it in full as soon as possible.
Check you credit files to see if it appears and ensure it is marked as settled.
Ignore your credit score as no one else cares about it. You just want to have your credit files in as good shape as possible, and settling defaults will help do that.0 -

That's right.0

It won't show on credit report, as it's not a debt covered by any credit agreement. They can still pursue recovery through courts if they wish though0

Your score is only seen by you and no 1 else.0
