Would 2 modems on same phone line work.

Options
My freind has recently went online with talktalk,

after a month they've made a bit of a ballsup and sent him two modems instead of one.

he's had the idea of using the existing modem for his pc, (which has been getting used successfully)

he's also about to get an xbox 360 and wants to put the 2nd modem into a seperate phone socket in a different room from the 1st modem.

I thought this would only work with a router into the first modem to split the internet, but then i'm not the cleverest with this.

could someone advise so I can pass this on.

  • It won't work! He would need to install a second phone line

To do that you'd need to split the telephone line with a frequency carrier, but as that's how adsl works over normal phone lines, that is already being done.

You are right, a router is the best way, though you could simply use the pc as a server

cheers, I'll let him struggle on, I've already tried to explain the concept of a router to him.

When he's baffled with it I'll point him in the direction of a router as I wouldn't have a clue how to use the pc as a server
  • Actually it's more simply using the PC as an internet gateway, rather than specifically as a server
  •

    how then?
  • as long as your not trying to connect to the internet on both modems at the same time, it's okay, or did I miss something?

My mate (honest it is), had the idea of connecting modem (a) to an extension socket in one room and running his pc, and modem (b) to an extension socket in the next room and running an xbox 360.

Could this work if both were connected to the phone sockets but only one turned on at a time?
  • It would mean unplugging the other modem each time you used the PC or X box, far better to network and save the hassle. The chances are, and I will appear to be rude here, but if he is that technically challenged, the first time he forgets that he hasn't unplugged the second modem, will cost him a pretty fortune

Obviously filters would have to be on both line and extension.

I'm also interested in the answer to this.
The land lady of my local has 2 modems and wants to use her laptop in the bar, and in her living area upstairs.
Same line but doesn't want to unplug/carry modem up and down stairs as well as laptop.
If possible would be cheaper than Wi Fi, also running ethernet cable up through ceiling is not option.
    Move along, nothing to see.
