Working as runner in supermarket

Hi
I am posting this on behalf of a friend who works in sainsburys.
Can some one please let me know what does a runner do? She has been offered a permanent contract with more hours as she wss doing overtime over there. She hence accepted the offer and requested for a store transfer. She was in an assumption that her job will be mainly at tills or self check outs but today one of her colleague said that she will be working as a runner, what does this mean. What does a runner do? Is a more pay? Is it better role career wise?

Thx

Why on earth has your friend accepted a job without knowing what it entails? A runner is generally a staff member who does pretty much whatever is required. That can mean chasing round the store to get replacement items if one is discovered to be faulty at checkout, for example leaking packaging.

She has always worked at the tills in the superstore and was offered a position by the checkout manager. She never thought about runner as she has never done it and the manager is very much aware. The problem is she works in a local sainsburys with 16 hrs standing job and working morning deliveries in the weekends. Her new offer is of 28hrs as a runner at heck outs with Sundays off.

What do you think is better for her now as she is in so much dilemma.

How on Earth are we supposed to answer that? You know her, tell her what you think! All we can say is that it's very likely that a 28 hours supermarket job will pay more than a 16 hours job does, so if earning more money is a factor then the new job is probably the better option.

Runner I recogn is like the customer service clerk in Asda where you go to them if it’s broke/ overcharged etc. More hours and stuff - I’d deffo go for it

If the OP's friend could, she would have not posted here and this is why this forum is here, ie to help people with questions/quieries.

If you lot can't answer a simple question, then rather than barate the OP, just keep it to yourself!

We may be able to answer the question as to what a runner is, but we can't possibly know which job is better for the friend. We have no knowledge of their personal situation.

Didn't it occur to her to enquire at the time the job offer was made?
    Don’t be a can’t, be a can.

Quite, worser things have been said on here, I recall a let us know after you start once before! And that was pre interview. And not as ‘third party’!

To be fair I took the company name and job title stuck it in a search engine and it loaded a video that looks like it was done by a budding twitter user back in 2012 possibly, of that very job as one of the first results that pops up. Maybe rather out of date but that’s all it could have took. And of course that most jobs carry the tag line of this job description list isn’t exhaustive or whatever duties to support the business. ;)
