Replacing Single Oven With Double Oven

Hi,
I have a rather elderly Hotpoint single oven, we want to replace it with a new double oven and also replace the hob.
We have the space, there's just a large "shelf" under the current oven, how hard is it to replace these, is it possible to DIY?
I am not sure of the current ampage so will be checking that tonight when I get home.
I've been quoted £150-£250 to remove the old oven and fit the new one, plus replacing the old hob - the new ceramic hob is the exact same size as the old one.

The majority of single ovens are rated at under 13 amps so work off the existing kitchen ring main either by way of a plug or hard wired into a 13 amp fused spur outlet.
A double oven is rated much higher then this (4 - 7kw) and therefore needs a dedicated supply. Sometimes they can share a supply with the hob providing the total expected load doesn't exceed the cable loading and the loading of the breaker in the consumer unit.
The physical wiring of the oven in isn't complicated but you need to be competent to work out the load ratings.Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0 -
The oven housing unit 'shelf' and base would likely need to be removed as the new oven will sit roughly level with the bottom of the current unit. I think the oven will come with a bracket to support at the bottom.
as above, check the ratings of your wiring etc before committing0 -
Thanks, so I suppose my question is what is the current capacity for the existing kitchen wiring, the consumer unit has a 30A fuse for the kitchen if that makes a difference?
There is also a dedicated switch for the oven and hob on the wall in the kitchen, would this give me any more info?
I can do the swapping around myself but as mentioned, if it involves any electrical work I will get an electrician, but don't really want to pay £150 for what is possibly very simple work.
It looks like the kitchen was installed with the intention of having a double oven (the gap is for a double) but they changed their minds and got a single in the end as my mother in law (it's her kitchen) never did any cooking but lived off microwave meals! So I wonder if they got the electrics done with that in mind.Make £2018 in 2018 Challenge - Total to date £2,1080 -

.
But respectfully, it isn't simple work as you clearly don't know what you are doing. This is why electricians go through a considerable training programme, have on-going training and have to have liability insurance.Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0 -
Thanks for the comments.
We got a qualified domestic appliance fitter round who said our house needs rewiring and couldn't do the work, so just got another £5k or so to save up now!
We've got another guy coming round to look at the hob as he reckons that should be replaceable, the oven will just need repairing for now.Make £2018 in 2018 Challenge - Total to date £2,1080 -
We've had another electrician who has said he is prepared to do the work and the wiring is fine.
I've checked and he has public liability insurance.Make £2018 in 2018 Challenge - Total to date £2,1080
