Howdy!
Bizarre things happening over the last few days . .
I have been buying a few CDs on amazon ,eBay and my local hmv
I have had 2 problems with brand new CDs in the last 3 days tho..
On weds, I went to my local hmv and purchased the latest Metallica remaster. Got home ,and it would not work on my normal CD player.
So, I put CDs into my Mac mini and burned them onto my Mac as I normally do . I then went back and exchanged the cd for the remastered vinyl version . All good .
I played other CDs which I got from eBay, like the black sabbath remastered and Alice in chains cd. Used , but played fine on my normal CD player.
Today, I received the latest release by Jean michel jarre on cd , and it does not play on my CD player . Same problem . Again, I burned it onto my Mac mini and it works .
The Klaus Schulze cd I got from Amazon works fine .
So, I'm wondering ..is it time for a new CD player ?
My stereo system is separates . The CD player is a nackamichi mb-10
A five cd multichanger , purchased around 2001 .
I know I can still use the Mac . However, I still like a hard copy which I can then rip onto iTunes . Plus of course, you do get the occasional glitch on computers .
Thanks in advance

What's a CD ?? :rotfl:
By the way it was a bit naughty ripping the CD and then taking it back !!0 -
CDs you get from Amazon you can download the files from their Music section for iTunes purposes.
But otherwise, CD Players aren't expensive and its more plausible older units can't play "modern" disks, what you have now probably can't play CDs you burn on the computer because they are technically different.
However in your case due to the age of the unit its more likely that the laser is having trouble recognising a CD which may be a sign of age. Normally the lasers are not replaceable on their own.0 -
you've worn it out with all that loud heavy rock - am I glad I'm not your neighbour?0

Good point about the ripping of cd . Ironically enough, the vinyl has a code inside that gives a free download
Bizarrely enough I had a text conversation with a friend of mine ( mid 30's) regarding buying CDs etc. He has everything on download as he thinks that's the future . Years ago , I used to have stacks of vinyl
Then I converted to CDs , more or less halving my collection . Now its a combination of all 3 . Luckily enough I have room for it all in my small flat . I got rid of all those original cd jewel boxes . That saved a lot of space .
Thankfully I don't buy much music these days0 -
Neil, I think you're right about the laser. I may wait until it stops playing stuff altogether . I had a fantastic CD player that lasted about 12 years . Unfortunately , it was the laser meaning I had to dump it.
It's a shame that you can't get lasers replaced ,as far as I'm aware.
I have the amazon play system as well .0 -
You can get lasers replaced but it might just need servicing. Oil and grease dries out over time and dust on the mechanism can affect how the laser moves across the disc. Look locally for someone to repair it or ask a decent hifi shop.0

Also the ‘window’ may just need a clean0

FWIW, a couple of years back, I took the plunge and ripped all my CDs to FLAC with EAC, boxed them up and put them in the garage.
I play them back from PC HDD over the network with a Logitech Squeezebox Touch (other streaming options area available), and in the intervening time, I haven't felt the need to touch a single CD, apart from one obscure jazz title that I needed to dig out to check track listing.
Much better for long listening sessions - you can play an artist's complete catalogue, in order, in one go. Have playlists spanning multiple artists and titles. Remote control options are available for phones and tablets.
This sounds like the ideal time for the OP to consider something similar0 -
Nakamichi are more famous for their tape decks, but did make some very good CD players too. I've actually got a 5(?) disk multichanger for a PC at home!
Anyway, CD audio technology didn't really go anywhere once burning standards settled down - having trouble playing CD-R or CD-RW would be more normal.
CD players are cheap these days but you've got a good one. If you're technically minded at all take it apart and give it a service, or at least get at and clean the lens. DO NOT use alochol, the lens might be plastic.
Have a search, or go over to AV-Forums, which might help with specific advice. Nakamichi are one of those rare companies that actually make products that can be serviced. Take advantage of that!0
