TV with integral DVD player - DVD stuck in player

Hi, I have a 6 year old Toshiba television with DVD player in the back of it. I only use it to watch DVDs.
The last DVD I played is still inside and the eject button isn't working. I phoned a local TV engineer and he said it can't be repaired and to bin it and buy a new one.
Would it work if I bought an external DVD player, connect it up and simply use the TV as a screen?

I take it you have tried the manual open method

Thank you for your replies. Unfortunately there isn't a hole which would allow manual opening. I think this is because there isn't a drawer: the dvd was inserted into a vertical slot at the back of the TV where it slid in just like a CD in a car's CD player.0

Hurrah! Success. I followed YouTube instructions for getting a stuck CD out of a car CD slot:
Turn off power.
Press play and eject buttons simultaneously. This may force eject.
When I switched the power back on, and pressed eject, out came the DVD.0
