New bathroom install - what to choose for the walls?

  • I looked at boards a couple of years back, there was a significant difference in quality/design/look of the joins.
    In what way?

Boards were better than tiles in your opinion, tiles were better than boards? In what way was the difference significant?

I ordered panels for my shower room then realised I couldn't get them in the room as it is very small. Make sure you can get a panel the required size in and turn it round the right way before you order!
From your comment i get the impression they can't be cut to size?

They can be cut but my room is taller than wide so could not turn the wall sized panel to put it against the wall. I bought narrrower panels which fitted in but meant joins on the walls. You wouldn't want to cut and then stick back together

Joint trims, the look quality of those varied.
There were a few options that used no trims and they look a lot better.

There are also choices of material from flimsy acrylics, fibreglass, composites, solid surface...

don't have a preference, some rooms boards will be better others tiles, some a combination.

There are panels that look like tiles some more convincing than others

Another thing to consider if having a shower is ceiling entry no hidden pipes or holes through your nice new walls.
  • I have to admit, it comes down to preference, but my parents had expensive, white wall panels put in and I think they look a bit caravan chic.

I had matt wall tiles and much prefer them. It came out a bit cheaper than my parents wall panels as well.

If a couple of tiles have popped imo it's better to get them all off and check there's nothing else going on behind them that needs addressing, could just be a small area of weak grout allowing moisture ingress, or it could be something else. Last thing you want to do is pay out on a new bathroom only to find an ongoing issue further down the line.

I'd buy a mask, googles and a crowbar and pull down the lath and plaster walls. Level out any wonky timber framework with battens, install your plumbing, showervalve, floating taps, bathroom tv, bluetooth speakers etc into the wall, reboard with waterproof plasterboard in the areas where it might get wet then apply your desired finish to new flat walls.

Great opportunity to fit shaver socket (for charging toothbrush), heated mirror etc. Also fit ply or battens to accept wall mounted basin, towel radiator etc.

I also tend to pack with Rockwool to deaden the wall and make boarded walls sound more solid.

Better to do a major job like this properly from the start rather than bodge over nearly 100 years of changes.

I fit them in rentals, usually the PVC ones which look good but if the budget can stretch to it use the Multipanel by Grant Westfield ones, these are top notch wood backed boards. Twice the price but if your only doing it once then its worth it.
  • Yeah we have no plans to move any time soon. Of course having said that we could be out in 12 months time but really we intend on living here long term.

Regards the deadening that's something the whole bloody house needs with the way our neighbours can be at night!!
