Standalone garage insurance

Does anyone know if I can get standalone garage insurance for my private garage at home?

My house insurance does cover it but its not sufficient, there is a limit to the amount I could claim and it would barely even cover the cost of replacing the doors, let alone any tools etc. My insurer will not increase the level of garage cover (£2,000 max), i'd want several times that.

Struggling with google and comparison sites it just leads you to home insurers that want you to buy a full home policy.

Why does the house insurance not cover the costs of rebuilding it? It should cover the costs of rebuilding the house and any outbuildings.

Contents of the garage is a different matter. Any items over the single value limit?

  • Its the contents. Nothing over single item limit save the cars which have their own policies but the combined total of the kit in there is way over the £2k max (Thats a £2k max total allowed to claim if it was cleared out). I have a set of ten spanners that were £300 on their own.
  • Try a different insurer that doesn't have an inner limit for contents in a garage?

IIRC LV= removed their limit for outbuildings a year or so ago.
  • Really struggling with this, only option I seem to have is changing insurer to one of a couple with a higher limit, and get absolutely robbed in the process.

The higher limit may not be enough.
I had a relatively unlimited policy when our garage burned down (I say unlimited, if it was, everything was below these limits)
What they didn't cover, were items that they considered professional. For example, a "hobby" compressor was covered, but a car specific injector puller wasn't.
My insurance at that time was from a comparison site, and cost under £300 Buildings and Contents.
    Perhaps try NFU Mutual.
