Most cars will be able to flash the full beams irrespective of other light settings. The OP would have had to hold the full beams on for a prolonged period, though. If full beam headlights came on then dipped must have been on.
Is it? Even in pitch black with no oncoming traffic? Is it not illegal to use main beams on the motorway?

Indeed. The OP still seems to be concerned about this. The only common offences that are policed by camera are: Speeding, Red Light offences, Box Junction offences, and that's it, AFAIK.But in answer to the question you can't be done if you haven't been pulled.0 -

Any examples of those with rear DRLs?0 -
I regularly see people on just DRL at night, no rear lights, only so much you can do on the bike short of knocking on the window and telling them. I honestly don't know how they can see the road clearly - doing 15mph on a bike with a 1200 lumen light pointed right in front of you is fine for a bike, doing 30mph+ with some LEDs on that putting out about 400-500 lumen...
Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:
People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

I seem to remember my volvo 740 had them.I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.0

AFAIK Volvos and Saabs have had side lights on all the time since the 1960s. It's the law in Sweden0 -

From an article about DRL's …
We checked with car companies. Most, including Honda and Toyota, say they don't have rear DRL. Taillights only turn on when the headlights are on — whether you've turned them on manually or they come on automatically when it's darker outside.
Volvo is an exception — if lights are set to auto, then the tail lights come on with the front DRL, a company spokesman said.
I can't remember exactly which one's I've seen on the road but front LED DRL's are quite distinctive, I think it was a Citroen / DS thing and the rear lights were on too. A couple of posters above have confirmed this anyway, some cars have rear DRL's.Mr Generous - Landlord for more than 10 years. Generous? - Possibly but sarcastic more likely.0 -

I looked at 20 cars that passed me on the main road, 20% of them had a bulb out, its an acident waiting to happen.0 -

Rear lights would have been on if the side lights on, the lights at the side come on, ie each corner front and rear. If full beam headlights came on then dipped must have been on. Is it not illegal to use main beams on the motorway?

The correct answer is he's unlikely to be done but what's preventing prosecution?
The have six months to deal with it.0
