Politicians missed their chance there. Guaranteeing a full pint bound to get more votes.

I wonder how much pubs have closed in the over 5 years that this thread was started.

My main issue is that most pint glasses dont have a pint line so there is no way of knowing where the liquid should be to for it to be a full pint. This particularly isn't helped with certain European beers having advertising showing a 1"+ head.

Our local isn't too bad, most beers are 1cm at most of head and the cider is often poured until it's literally overflowing the glass but others are really bad.

Was funny the other day with a lass ordering a beer but said she likes a lot of head (on the beer)... firstly they thought she wanted a lemonade top so that went down the sink and got it right the second time but seemed unnatural to them. Given its £7.20 a pint certainly not wanting to be short changed on the beer.
  • Hello,
During this Euro and festival seasons, it is clearly evident that short pints are being served all across the country.

The reason for this is for safety reasons, drinks are being served in plastic 500ml containers, as opposed to a 568ml glass pint, thus equating to a 12% shortage.

(and before anyone says it's 13.5%, you divide 500 by 568 that gives you 88%)...

Aren't they actually serving 500ml though? It's only "short" if they are telling you it's a pint.

I don't think they can legally sell you a 500ml draft beer.

Possibly, but they can certainly sell you a 500ml bottle of beer (which they then decant into a plastic glass).
  • Do pubs still have those glasses with a line etched into them below the rim? Also etched into the glass was "1 pint to line" which accounted for the head on the beer.
I was in a pub, years ago, where someone was handed a pint glass in which there wasn't a full pint because of the head. He asked "Can you fit a double Scotch in there?" Reply, "Yes, I think so." "Then will you kindly top it up with beer instead."
  • All well and good. Tired of pints 12-15% short I always ask for a top-up, sometimes having to do so twice to get anywhere near 5% short. This is tiresome and embarrassing and has led to me avoiding some pubs now. The worst was in a local JDW when after 3 goes my pint of Stella was still more than 6% short. After much tutting from the server I spoke to the manager who served it properly and spoke to the bar person. The outcome was that she hid out the back when I next went to the bar and I and another customer had to wait for a second server to come out. Do staff ever read guidelines? In some house publications I've even seen portrayals of pints 15% short.
