Boiler Quote

Options
My local plumber has quoted me for supply and fitting a new combination boiler. His terms are 50% money up front which I am not happy about and if I pay by credit card this incurs a handling charge of 2.75%.I thought that charging for using a credit card was made illegal after January 2018. Can I refuse to pay this handling charge?

Why don't you go for another plumber and tell the original his terms are unacceptable? As for his 50% up front who is purchasing the boiler. If him then his cashflow would be affected.

This article https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/news/2018/01/cards-fees-to-be-banned-from-saturday/ supports your view. Have you suggested his approach is no longer allowed?

When you say 'my' local plumber, is this someone you have used before, someone recommended or just the most local person you could find?

It would not hurt to get another plumber in to quote whilst you decide what to do. However, many of the busy ones might be trying to finish off work in the <2.5 weeks they have left before Christmas.

    Hope this helps.

I would never pay anything up front for this kind of work. Who can say the plumber wouldn't disappear having done none/part/a poor job of the work?

If I were you I would get a couple of different people in to quote and pick one that will accept cash on completion or payment within say 14 days of completion.

It's common to have to pay a deposit up front for boiler purchases. I wouldn't be installing your boiler unless the cost of the boiler was paid for up front.

You need to get other quotes.

If you do pay anything upfront make sure you have a written contract for the work and that the contract states under what circumstances you can get your money back. Make sure it considered all the reasons why you might need to get your money back.
The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.

    I think it's worth 2.75% of what, £1000? for peace of mind. That's only £27.50! :)
  • Can’t you part pay on credit card (I think it’s £100) and then you get credit protection for the whole amount even if you pay by DD or BACS

But charging fees to the customer for using a cc have been banned.

and don't ge for a cheap install. I bought my house last year with a new boiler fitted. It was a bodge job as were most of the things they did to house. Going to be £800 to move it and do a proper fit.:(

I suggest you find another plumber.

'Falling out' before the job has started doesn't bode well!
