Which heater would be best for me?

Options
Hi everyone,

We have a room in our house that is a little bit colder than the others and we are looking for supplementary heating options which will not break the bank.

It's an L-shaped kitchen/diner/conservatory combo, totalling around 50sqm. Had a thermometer in there for a month or so, and it seems to lose around 1ºC an hour in the colder evenings (so not a massive amount), due to the radiator not being able to output enough heat.

Obviously the solution is to install more radiators/a bigger radiator, which we are going to do in Spring, but for now, which little heater do you think would be able to output enough heat in the appropriate way?

I was thinking we probably only need a ~1.2kwh heater just to take the chill out, would like it to be silent (heh, ideally low noice), rotate, and be able to set a temperature (say, 18º). I'm guessing a convector will be too noisy?

The Dyson looks nice... but that's a bit too expensive  for only a few months a year. Any other options?

Many thanks!

I have a Dyson AM09 and love it but I would say that if your room is that size and really cold I'm not sure how effective it would be, I

It is a 2000KW in usage so with my tariff its 34p an hour running costs.

I wouldn't under estimate how little heat 1.2 would give you.

If its just for 4 or 5 months then the cheapest. take a look at the 1kw oil filled Simple range with thermostat from Argos at £29.
    https://www.argos.co.uk/product/4152318

For the size of the room the chances are it will be on all of the time though and you may need a 2kw one for when it gets cold.

Add in the running cost say 60 hours a week at .15p an hour so could cost you £7.50 a week to run.
So even the cheapest option is going to cost you about £160 over 4 months.
How much is it goint to cost to get the rads changed?

    Welcome to the forum.

Something like this would suffice as a supplementary heater:

I don't think they are loud, especially in a large 50sqm room.

Or get a cheap oil filled radiator.

If it moves, it's not going to be silent.

Basic convector heaters do not usually make any noise.

Just to confirm, this isn't to heat it up to 18ºC, this is just to maintain the temperature. We can easily get it up to that temp just by cooking alone, but then it slowly drops throughout the evening. So, 18º at 6pm, and down to 16/15º by around 10pm.

What I am hoping (heh) is that it will go "Oh, it's dropped below 18, let me turn on and throw some heat out", spin for 20 minutes, then turn off. Then 30 minutes later it repeats itself.

Do you really think it would be on all the time? I was hoping it would be on for around a third of the time. But that's pure guestimation.

With my OCD, it needs to have an explicit temperature setting :(

In that case splash out on the Dyson as that's what I do, set it to 18degrees and it cuts in / out to keep it at that.

I was hoping to not have to spend £300 on the heater itself if there was perchance a cheaper alternative out there with similar qualities

I have a very small bedroom around 4 metres square and I use a Benross 1.2kW halogen heater which I bought from Amazon for £13.25. I use it because it heats up quickly which I need for the morning. Previously I had an oil-filled radiator which took too long to heat up. It's about the same as a Beldray which costs twice as much. Replacement tubes are around a fiver for a pack of 3 from Amazon, eBay, RS Components and a lot of other retailers. Safety tilt cut-out and 15p an hour to run with my electric supplier - EDF.

Safety first - this is a radiant heater and needs to be supervised. If you have children or pets consider an oil-filled radiator.

For £59.99, some details from Argos (their spelling errors as it is a cut and paste job),:-
He 402e 2kW electronic convector with easy-to-read LCD display and simple operation, featuring delayed start and run back timer option. This convector offers a slim, stylish, virtually silent heat solution for any room. The intellegent Eco Mode allows the user to set the heater to their deisred temperature and the heater will optimise energy use to maintain the temperature.

Intellgent Eco Mode optimises energy use to maintain desired temperature.
