Scam?

I post on another board where there are many people trying to sell their houses, several of which have mentioned a scam they are aware of / have been victim to (one woman just posted at the weekend that this has happened to her).
Basically they accept an offer from someone who says their brother / uncle / whoever is going to be paying their deposit. Once things have progressed they then say that their deposit-payer has died suddenly and they can't afford the house, which then results in the rest of the chain dropping their prices in order not to break the chain.
Just wondered if anybody here has been subject to this?
