Why is my iPhone available storage disappearing?

I have a 64GB iPhone 6S. I had a look a little while ago and was sitting around the 10GB of free storage mark.
Now i haven't installed any new apps and sure i've taken photos but not really a whole hell of a lot, a few videos but again nothing lengthy ... most certainly not 6GBs worth because that's what i'm now at - 4GB remaining.
It reminded me of when i was having similar issues with the SSD i have my Windows 7 installed on. I wasn't storing anything on the SSD itself - i have a separate HDD for that, but the free space on the SSD kept dropping day-by-day.
Just wondered if anyone could offer an explanation to this?

Have people been sending you lots of photos and videos on whatsapp? Got lots of emails recently?
Videos take up a VAST amount of storage on an iphone when it's on the default setting as it's full HD pretty much. You can see what's using your storage in Settings/General/iPhone Storage and see where the largest chunk is.0 -
Bit of a development here.
So yesterday i had about 4GB left of storage. I backed up my phone, erased it & sent it in for a battery replacement today.
Got the phone back & restored from the backup ......... I now have 17GB of free space.
What concerns me is where has this come from? All my photos/videos etc appear to be on the phone but this extra 13GB has to have come from somewhere.0 -
I once had a podcast app which stored every podcast I'd ever downloaded, per the space taken calculation in iPhone settings, yet was telling me in the app they were all deleted. Deleting that app freed GBs of space.0

Yet i've deleted nothing. I simply erased the phone, all content, settings etc, sent the phone to the store for a new battery, got it back and restored from the backup i made seconds before i erased the phone.0
