Eon Bills suddenly increased

Hi,

I switched Energy Provider using a comparison site to Eon. I signed up to a deal that promised a fixed price for a year (around £40 per month gas and electric). However a couple of months ago Eon sent me a letter saying my bill is going up to to £120 a month. Admittedly I had not given them a meter reading since I signed up. However I did then give them a reading when I called up to complain. They were not really able to give me an explanation as to why it had increased (that I understood anyway). Any advice on what to do, or anyone with a similar experience? I thought that by entering into a fixed term agreement I was guarenteed the price for a year.

You signed up to a fixed unit price and not a guaranteed fixed monthly payment. The monthly payment is based on the usage you gave them. If you use more than that then they will increase the monthly payment to cover it. £40 per month is ridiculously low for dual fuel, the average will be more like double that. What kWh annual use did you put in the comparison site ? What is your current debit balance ?

Just sounds like a DD increase not a price increase.

If you had supplied a reading it may have been a more accurate monthly DD earlier. It sounds like you have under paid and to ensure you don't build a debt they have adjusted your DD accordingly

Hello TomT79 and welcome to the Forums.

Already some excellent advice - thanks both. To confirm, with our Fixed Tariffs, we guarantee the unit price and daily standing charge won't change for the duration of the agreement.

Your Monthly Direct Debits will be based on these prices and the amount of energy being used. A change in the usage will trigger a review as we aim to achieve as near as possible to a zero balance by the annual payment review.

If you're registered with our website, you can use the Direct Debit Manager on there to keep on top of things and help stop the account building up too much credit/debit. By popping in meter readings, you can change the monthly payments by up to 20 per cent up or down (by up to 5 per cent up or down without readings).

It's a good way to make sure payments match changing circumstances. We'll let you know by how much the account will be in credit/debit if the payments are changed but the usage does alter as expected.

    Hope this is useful TomT79.

Can you post your opening and the readings you have just given please.

I don't know where the£40 a month for gas and electric comes from but that's ridiculously low. A recent poster had £34 but the more realistic was £70-80
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill
