YNAB vs Yolt/Money Dashboard

Hello everyone. I'm trying to reduce my everyday spending and to start budgeting my future spending. I have a very clear picture of my bills and regular spend (e.g., childcare, gym membership, Oyster card), but when it comes to food, clothes, travel, etc... not so much. I use a simple Excel spreadsheet to keep track of bills/invoices, but I don't track anything else. Also, I use only one bank account for salary, bills and everyday spending. I do have two other bank accounts but I use these as savings account, as they offer higher interest than savings accounts. Last but not least, I have some savings accounts, a mortgage, a pension fund, and two credit cards that I usually pay in full. I'd like to see everything in one place, if that makes sense.

I read a bit about budgeting tools and it looks like YNAB, Yolt, and Money Dashboard could be good options. Any others? Pros and cons for each? Which one do you use and why?

  • I purchased to YNAB in 2012. From a financial perspective, it has turned my life around. From being continuously in debt, I am now a saver.

Although YNAB is expensive, it is worth every penny in my book. (I am still using the 'classic' version of YNAB, plus the app, and do not pay a subscription).
I work within the voluntary sector, supporting vulnerable people to rebuild their lives.

    I love my job

I use Yolt and it works fine as an account aggregator (to see all your current accounts in one place) but I feel it falls short as a budgeting app - it just feels a bit clunky, slow and cumbersome to use. Can't speak for any of the others I'm afraid

Would any (or all) of the aggregators allow me and my partner to see all of our individual bank and credit card accounts as well as our joint accounts in one place?

It makes a lot of sense, and wouldn't we all like to see everything in one place. Depending on what accounts you have, you may strike lucky and your chosen app does support all your financial institutions. Your chances of that happening are very slim if you want to include investments (whether pension fund or other), or savings accounts with Building Societies. It's a matter of checking what you need versus what the apps support.

I find that there is no app that deals with budgets as well as YNAB, and it's the best choice if you want to be proactive rather than just tracking spends.
Retired at age 56 after having "light bulb moment" due to reading MSE and its forums. Have been converted to the "budget to zero" concept and use YNAB for all monthly budgeting and long term goals.

MsMoney is still the best personal finance tool.

Free tool development stopped because it did everything you could ever need.
