Smart Parking PCN - incorrect VRM entered

Hi everyone,
My first post on here so bear with me.
I recently took my wife and kids to butlins for a little family break over Halloween. As my car was in the garage I borrowed my mother's to go away with.
On the 31st of October at 10:27 we entered a car park at fantasy island skegness to get a few last minute bits for our costumes, I paid £1.60 for a 60 minute stay and we left at 11:01 so stayed for approximately 34 minutes.
I never thought anything else of it until a couple of weeks later when my mother phoned me to inform me she'd received a PCN from Smart Parking, it was then that I realised what I'd actually done, I had entered my number plate into the VRM machine instead of my mother's. I thought, I'll just appeal and I still have the original ticket as evidence so surely that should be enough, but how wrong was I!
Fast forward to the 29th of November after not hearing a word not even an acknowledgement of the appeal being received even after numerous phone calls to check which were never answered, I receive a letter from Smart Parking this time addressed to me personally (yes I gave my name which after reading some threads I realise was a mistake) saying that they have decided to uphold the PCN as it is 'the responsibility of the motorist to enter the full and correct VRM when using the machine, and ensure the payment is made for the full duration' (which technically it was)
So anyway, I'm now a bit torn between taking it further to POPLA as I have a code or just paying the fine and forgetting about it (but I'm really not happy about it) and I noticed that some of the people on here are extremely helpful and knowledgeable in this area so may be able to point me in the right direction.
Any help or advice would be much appreciated 👍🏻
