Contents insurance paid after leaving

Hi I was in the process of changing bank accounts today and cancelling a few direct debits when I rang contents insurance on a property that I moved out of five years ago but sold 4 months ago and have been paying contents all this time in an unfurnished property anyway I asked the guy to cancel policy as I sold property 4 months ago and he said there will be a 48.00 charge unless I write in with proof of sale and then I will get a refund for the 4 months I have been paying..then I got to thinking I have been paying contents insurance on a property I have not lived in for 5 years,my negligence for not checking direct debits, have I any chance of anything back or just be happy with the few months, the thing is I wouldn’t have been insured in any case once they found out it was rented ..thanks
