Is it worth being in a Union these days when I have legal insurance on my home insurance

Thinking I would only use them for employment disputes in a real emergency, so wondering whether to renew my union membership next year in case of grievances/disputes. Surely, this home insurance and early conciliation via ACAS would cover it?

Advice Please....

A union will take on cases that an Insured legal policy would not entertain.

Generally Home Legal Cover want a more than 50% chance of winning, in reality they may unofficially want a higher chance of winning before taking a case on.

Unions will take cases on to make case law which an Home Legal may not take on

Try using your home insurance for problems before you’ve been sacked, a union would help, I doubt your insurer would.

  • I think you need to check in minute detail the no doubt endless small print of your insurance contract and also confirm with your insurer that they would pay for the service you would need - and be very clear to them what it is you would be looking for.

Having said that, it might depend a lot,on where and who you work for. In some companies it would definitely worth being part of a Union.

If you are called to a disciplinary meeting or have a grievance meeting, statute only allows for you to be accompanied by a trade union representative or a work colleague. Employers can allow other people to accompany you but only if they choose to do so - if you say I want to bring my legal advisor with me, 99% of employers are going to say nope - union rep or colleague only.
